In Loving Memory of
Hugh McGreevy

of Grande Prairie
June 2, 1947 - September 5, 2023

Hugh McGreevy, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of Maple Ridge, BC., passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital from, C.O.P.D., at the age of 76 years.

Hugh was born on June 2, 1947, in County Down, Ireland. He was the middle child of Francis and Catherine McGreevy’s 11 children.

Upon completion of his education, Hugh worked for a local farmer before beginning training as a jockey in England. He was young and didn’t want to stay in England, so he returned home and worked various jobs before immigrating to

Canada. Here in Canada he tried a few different jobs. He loved horses and dogs so exercised the horses at the Racetrack as well as trained horses for private owners. He also worked at the Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre and helped with show jumping events. He was happy to get a new job at the S.P.C.A, which he enjoyed for a few years. He then decided to become a barber and did that until he retired at the ripe old age of 72.

Hugh had many talents. Besides his ability to make people laugh, he had a wonderful singing voice and was pretty impressive on the dance floor.

Hugh will be sadly missed by his son Brennan and his surviving siblings and families; brothers: Mickey, Len (Noleen), and Francis (Wanda); sister Kathleen (Grant); brothers-in-law and families: Sean (Lily), and Johnny (Sally); and his special friend of 10 years Linda and her family. Hugh loved his many nieces and nephews and spent as much time as he could with them.

Hugh was predeceased by his father Francis “Fra” and mother Catherine “Katie” McGreevy, two infant brothers Seamus and Francis, and older brother Joe, his sisters Lily McFadden (Sean), Sally McKay (Johnny), and Rose Brennan.

At Hugh’s request, there will be no funeral. However, a small gathering will be planned in September in Bezanson – date to be announced later. An additional Celebration of Life will be held in Maple Ridge, BC where his ashes will be interred.

Memorial donations may be made to the Grande Prairie Care Centre (9705 – 94th Ave., Grande Prairie, AB, T8V 3A2), where Hugh was treated with so much kindness and respect.
